Diploma in Computing and Information Systems

This programme is for you if you want to learn how to develop systems that can grow to meet new and changing needs in modern business environments and in arts, media and cultural applications. On successful completion of Diploma in CIS, you gain credit for Level 1 of the BSc degree in Computing and Information Systems. The Diploma in Computing and Information Systems is also a qualification in its own right. 

The Diploma courses provide the foundations of the mathematical modelling of systems, the use and basic design of computers and the place of computers in business practices and an introduction to programming.

Structure and Syllabus

Diploma consists of 5 units (the 4 compulsory Level 1 units of BSc plus a fifth compulsory unit Mathematics for business) PLUS a Study skills in English course. Students studying the Diploma must take classes in Study Skills in English in their first year.

Level 1 of BSc Computing and Information Systems

Four compulsory full units:

Mathematics for computing [2910102]

Information systems: foundations of e-business [2910108]

Introduction to Java and object-oriented programming [2910109]

Introduction to computing and the internet [2910110]

Registration and Examination fees

Independent study demands that you are motivated, well-organised and focused. We advise that to complete in the minimum study period you will need devote at least 250 hours of study to each full course unit.

For the Diploma, the total fee costs less than £2,000 if you complete in the minimum study period.

Note: this page is intended for use by prospective students as a guide. The course structure and fees shown above are subject to changes. Not all units will necessarily be available in every year. Registering as an external student with UOL and for the examination is entirely separate from enrolment on MGC courses. You should visit college and relevant university websites for up-to-date information. The student must seek and obtain a certificate of eligibility from the university and pay the application, registration, exam, exemption (if any) and other fees to the university directly.

Entry Requirement:

To be eligible for the Diploma you must:

bullet be aged 17 years or older before 1 September in the year you first register with the University (there can be no exceptions to this requirement) and
bullet EITHER have passed a minimum of four separate subjects at GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level (at not less than grade C) including Mathematics or equivalent examination and
bullet provide proof of competence in English acceptable to the University (it may be necessary for you to have passed a recognised test of proficiency, at the appropriate level, within
the past three years)
and
bullet have been admitted to a full- or part-time course of instruction at an institution which is permitted to teach the Diploma.
bullet OR must have been admitted to a full- or part-time course of instruction at an institution with 'Advanced' status, having successfully completed the entry test of that institution.

Applicants who did not have English as the formal language of instruction are expected to demonstrate a reasonable command of the language by taking a TOEFL or an IELTS test (for a TOEFL a score of 580 (or 237 on the computerised test) plus the Test of Written English (TWE) with a score of 4.5 (or a Writing Rating of 4.5 in the computerised test); for an IELTS test an overall score of at least 6 is achieved with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-test). Applicants who don't have TOEFL or IELTS can undertake an intensive Pre-course English Language or EFL at College.
